Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast needs sponging*
  • 3.33 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.75 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 whole egg

Instructions

  • In a small jug, mix lukewarm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 15 minutes until the yeast activates and becomes foamy. This process is known as sponging and is crucial for the dough's rise.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to ensure that all dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • In a separate bowl, mix yogurt and egg until well combined. This mixture will add moisture and richness to the dough.
  • Once the yeast is foamy, add the yeast mixture and yogurt-egg mixture to the dry ingredients. Stir with a fork until a loose, sticky dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a splash of milk or water. If it's too wet, incorporate a little more flour.
  • Gently knead the dough until it forms a rough ball. This should take just a few minutes. Be careful not to over-knead, as it can make the dough tough.
  • Cover the bowl with cling wrap and a tea towel. Let it proof in a warm spot for 2 hours until the dough doubles in size. This step is essential for developing flavor and texture.
  • Use the dough to make various dishes like cheesy loaf, pizza, naan bread, savory stuffed rolls, cinnamon rolls, pretzels, stuffed dinner rolls, or a braided Nutella loaf. The possibilities are endless!
  • Store the dough in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for later use. Just remember to let it come to room temperature before using.
