Equipment

  • 9x13 baking dish Use for baking the bars.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour spooned and leveled
  • 3 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 3/4 cup granulated sugar divided
  • 2 tsp cinnamon or apple pie spice
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 4 medium apples cored and grated (no need to peel)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9x13 baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on the longer sides, or use nonstick cooking spray.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Use a pastry blender or your hands to work in the egg and butter until pea-sized clumps form. Press half of this mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
  • In another bowl, mix the remaining 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and cornstarch. Squeeze out excess liquid from the grated apples, then combine them with the sugar mixture. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust. Crumble the remaining dough over the apples.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is slightly golden. Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

For added flavor, consider mixing in chopped nuts or oats into the crumble mixture before baking.
