Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 10.5 oz beef, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp light soy sauce
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 0.5 inch ginger, minced
  • 0.5 unit onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 unit capsicum (bell pepper), sliced
  • 0.25 cup dark sweet soy sauce (Kicap Manis)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste or puree
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 0.5 cup water

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine the sliced beef, light soy sauce, and 1 tsp cornstarch. Mix well and let it marinate for about 15 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the dark sweet soy sauce, tomato paste, oyster sauce, black pepper, and water to create the black pepper sauce. Set aside.
  • Heat a pan over medium-high heat and add a splash of oil. Once hot, add the marinated beef slices and sear them until cooked through, about 3-4 minutes. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan for even cooking.
  • Add the minced ginger, sliced onion, and minced garlic to the pan. Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, ensuring not to burn the garlic for the best flavor.
  • Toss in the sliced capsicum and pour in the prepared black pepper sauce. Stir well and let the sauce bubble for about 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully.
  • In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2-3 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Pour this into the pan and stir until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes. This will give your sauce a lovely glossy finish.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add some sliced chili peppers to the stir-fry. Serve this dish over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal. No alcoholic drinks allowed, please substitute with a non-alcoholic option.
