Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a medium-sized 8 x 8 inch baking dish.
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder, baking powder, espresso powder, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Add this liquid mixture to the flour-sugar mixture and stir until combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.
In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar with the remaining 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter.
Pour the very hot water over the top, but do not stir.
Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 40 minutes, or until the center is just barely set.
Allow the cake to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
For an extra indulgent treat, top with whipped cream or a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
