Line an 8-inch square baking pan with lightly greased parchment paper or non-stick foil. Set it aside.
Drain the cherries, keeping 2 tablespoons of the syrup (optional). Rinse the cherries and cut any large ones in half. Set them aside.
In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk. Microwave for 90 seconds at 70 percent power. Stir well, using the residual heat to fully melt the chocolate chips. If needed, microwave in additional 15-second intervals until smooth.
Stir the cherries and salt into the chocolate mixture. For extra cherry flavor, add the 2 tablespoons of reserved syrup (optional).
Transfer the fudge mixture to the prepared baking pan and spread it out evenly.
Chill the fudge until firm, for at least 2 hours or overnight. Then, cut it into squares.
Notes
For a festive touch, top the fudge with chopped nuts or sprinkles before chilling.
