Equipment

  • Large Skillet For cooking beef patties and gravy.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 0.5 cup Panko bread crumbs
  • 0.333 cup yellow onion, peeled and diced
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 medium yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Panko bread crumbs, diced onions, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly using your hands. Make sure not to overmix, as this can make the patties tough.
  • Shape the beef mixture into six oval patties, each weighing around 6 ounces. This ensures even cooking.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil. Once hot, place the beef patties in the skillet and cook on both sides until the center is no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes per side. You may need to cook in batches based on skillet size.
  • Transfer the cooked burger patties to a plate and set aside. Remember to let them rest for a few minutes to retain their juices.
  • In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium to prepare the onion gravy. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and the sliced onions. Cook for about 10 minutes until soft, then increase the heat to medium-high and continue cooking until the onions caramelize, stirring occasionally.
  • Transfer the caramelized onions to a bowl or the plate with the burger patties to keep them warm.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Add flour and whisk until smooth to avoid lumps.
  • Pour the broth mixture into the skillet and cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Return the beef patties and onions to the skillet. Spoon the gravy over the beef and let them cook in the gravy for another 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley before serving. Enjoy your homemade beef steak with flavorful onion gravy!

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a splash of red wine to the gravy while it simmers. (No alcoholic drinks allowed, please substitute with a non-alcoholic option.)
