Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2.5 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup parmesan cheese, finely grated
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 0.75 cup water
  • 0.33 cup olive oil
  • 8 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.5 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 56 ounce crushed tomatoes with basil
  • 1.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 8 sub rolls crusty sub rolls, cut in half
  • 8 ounces provolone cheese, shredded
  • 6 ounces fontina cheese, shredded
  • 2 ounces parmesan cheese, finely grated
  • 1 optional fresh basil, torn for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, eggs, parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, and water until combined. Tip: Make sure to mix well but avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender.
  • Shape the mixture into meatballs and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through. Tip: Use a meat thermometer to ensure they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C).
  • In a saucepan over medium-low heat, warm the olive oil. Add minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes, sautéing until fragrant.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, salt, sugar, and Italian seasoning. Tip: Let this sauce simmer for at least 15 minutes to develop deep flavors, then add the chopped basil.
  • Add the cooked meatballs to the sauce and coat them evenly.
  • Preheat the broiler. Fill each sub roll with meatballs and sauce, then top with provolone and fontina cheeses.
  • Broil the subs until the cheese melts and turns slightly golden, about 2-3 minutes. Tip: Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.
  • Sprinkle with basil and parmesan before serving warm.

Notes

For a twist, try adding sautéed bell peppers and onions to your subs.
